This is my third time directing INTO THE WOODS. I first tried my hand at directing the show when I was in my 20's, and then again in my 30's and now here I am in my 40's, directing students who were the age I was when I first ventured into the woods. It's been really interesting visiting the show once every decade for the last 20 years - fascinating how life experience allows you to experience the twists and turns of Sondheim's masterpiece in new and fresh ways. It's been interesting seeing it through the eyes of our students too, and has really hit home to me just how remarkable this work is. There's so much to discover here, and even after three goes at it I'm still finding new things. Sondheim really was a clever clogs, wasn't he.
Taking on a show this complex is no small task for emerging artists. I have been so inspired by the tenacity of these young performers as they have wrestled with this material. They have worked tirelessly to master Sondheim's complicated music and lyrics, and we've often said in rehearsals it's a bit like climbing an enormous mountain. At last we have reached the summit and are pleased to show you the fruits of the climb tonight!
Thank-you to the students at AAPA for coming on this journey into the woods with me, and for being so daring as we ventured. I'm proud of each and every one of you.
Enjoy the show!
